Muscat
Deli
Muscat, also known as Moscato, is one of the oldest and most aromatic grape varieties, prized for its distinctive floral and fruity character. Its origins trace back to ancient civilizations in the Mediterranean and Middle East, with cultivation evidence found from Greek and Roman times. The name “Muscat” comes from the Persian word “muchk,” while “Moscato” is the Italian variation.
Muscat thrives in warm to hot climates and is cultivated globally, including in Italy, Greece, Spain, southern France, Australia, and California. The grapes form small to medium-sized clusters with oval berries, usually pale green to amber. They are known for intense aromas of orange blossom, rose, jasmine, apricot, peach, and citrus.
Muscat wines come in a variety of styles—still, sparkling, and dessert wines—and range from bone-dry to richly sweet. Dry Muscat wines are crisp and vibrant, while sweet versions, like Muscat de Frontignan or Muscat d’Alexandrie, are lusciously honeyed. These wines pair beautifully with desserts, fruit-based dishes, certain cheeses, and, in the case of dry styles, seafood and light appetizers.
Renowned for versatility, expressive aromatics, and a wide spectrum of wine styles, Muscat remains a beloved grape among winemakers and wine enthusiasts worldwide.
