Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety widely cultivated in central Italy, particularly in the regions of Abruzzo and Marche. Despite its name, it is distinct from the Tuscan wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is primarily made from Sangiovese grapes. The grape’s origins are somewhat unclear, but it has a long history of cultivation across central Italy.
Montepulciano thrives in warm, sunny climates and adapts well to various soil types. The grape produces medium- to large-sized clusters with thick-skinned berries, contributing to wines that are deeply colored and suitable for aging. Besides Abruzzo and Marche, Montepulciano is also grown in Molise, Puglia, Umbria, and some international regions.
Wines made from Montepulciano grapes are typically deep ruby to purple in color, with bold aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, chocolate, and occasional spice. They often feature moderate to high tannins, balanced acidity, and a structure that supports aging. Depending on production methods, these wines can develop additional complexity over several years.
Montepulciano pairs well with pasta, grilled meats, and aged cheeses, making it versatile for everyday meals and special occasions. Its combination of rich color, full-bodied fruit, and aging potential has made Montepulciano a staple of Italian red wines.
