Inzolia

Inzolia, also known as Ansonica, is a white wine grape primarily grown in Sicily, with roots that likely trace back to Greece before being brought to the island by ancient settlers. It has thrived in Sicily’s warm, sunny climate and diverse terroirs, particularly in regions like Menfi, Agrigento, and Trapani. The grape’s name may come from the Italian word “ensolia” or be linked to the town of Enna, reflecting its deep connection to the island.

The vines are vigorous and productive, producing medium to large clusters of yellowish-green grapes. Inzolia adapts well to a variety of soils, from limestone to volcanic, and benefits from the Mediterranean pattern of hot days and cooler nights, which helps preserve balanced acidity. It ripens early to mid-season, making it well-suited to Sicily’s climate.

Wines from Inzolia are aromatic and fresh, with citrus notes like lemon and orange, complemented by floral and herbal undertones, and occasionally hints of tropical fruits. They tend to have medium to full body with a slightly oily or waxy texture, and their vibrant acidity keeps them lively and versatile, suitable for both still and sparkling wines. Some styles are best enjoyed young, while others develop more complexity with short to medium-term aging.

Inzolia is an important grape in Sicilian viticulture, used both in varietal wines and in blends, including the production of the fortified Marsala wines. Its adaptability and distinctive character make it a standout in the Mediterranean wine landscape, offering wines that are fresh, flavorful, and uniquely tied to their sun-soaked island terroir.
