Verdelho

Verdelho is a white grape with deep roots in Portugal, most famously used in Madeira wine, where it played a role in the country’s maritime trade and wine history. Its name likely comes from verde, referring to the greenish hue of the berries as they ripen. While Madeira remains its historic home, Verdelho has spread globally to regions like Australia, California, New Zealand, and parts of South America, adapting well to a range of climates.

The grape produces medium-sized, greenish-yellow berries in loose clusters, and it ripens relatively early, making it suitable for both warm and cooler regions. Verdelho wines are aromatic and lively, often showing tropical fruit, citrus, and floral or spicy notes, with crisp acidity that gives them freshness and balance. Alcohol levels are generally moderate to high, and while many Verdelho wines are enjoyed young, Madeira-style versions can age gracefully, gaining richness and complexity over time.

Versatile and expressive, Verdelho offers both approachable, fruit-forward wines and more structured, age-worthy examples. Its adaptability and vibrant character make it a favorite for winemakers and wine lovers seeking wines with personality and clarity.
