Picpoul

Picpoul, also known as Piquepoul, is a white grape variety celebrated for its crisp, lively wines. Its roots trace back to southern France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region, particularly the Picpoul de Pinet AOC. The name likely comes from the Occitan words “pic” (lip) and “poul” (sting), a nod to the grape’s zesty, high-acid nature.

Viticulturally, Picpoul is vigorous and high-yielding, thriving in sunny, warm climates with relatively low susceptibility to disease. The grapes are medium-sized, round, and greenish-yellow at full ripeness.

In the glass, Picpoul wines are bright and refreshing, bursting with citrus (lemon, lime), green apple, pear, and sometimes subtle mineral or floral notes. The hallmark is their high acidity, which gives them a crisp, clean profile and makes them incredibly food-friendly. Moderate in alcohol, Picpoul pairs particularly well with seafood, including oysters, shellfish, and light, fresh dishes.

Picpoul’s combination of vibrancy, refreshment, and versatility makes it a standout for those seeking a lively white wine with a strong sense of place from the Languedoc.
